Pastor Jay Hilbinger

Senior Pastor

I grew up in and around Baltimore, MD, and received my B.S. degree in Business Administration from UNCG in 1984. I began serving First  Lutheran in January, 1997, after 7 years with Ebenezer Lutheran in Columbia, SC, where I earned my M. Div. degree at Lutheran Seminary in 1989. One of my favorite Bible stories is Mark 9:14-29, in which the  father of a boy who needs healing says to Jesus, "I believe; Help my unbelief!" A favorite quote from Martin Luther (one which we all  struggle with) is, "The church exists in a constant state of reform."

My wife, Cindy, is a teacher, and our daughter, Katie Bess, graduated from UNC-Asheville, got her Masters of Social Work from UNC-Chapel and has just accepted a job there.   For leisure and recreation I enjoy music, movies, cooking, tennis and basketball.

Worship and Traditional Music Coordinator

I have distinct memories of sitting on the bench beside our church organist when I was just three and four years old, watching in awe as his hands and feet flew over the manuals and pedals. Still, when I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with degrees in economics and music, a career in church music was the furthest thing from my mind, so I became a banker. But as our family began to grow, more fitting opportunities were revealed, and I’ve been learning and growing as a church musician ever since. Before coming to FLC, I was Director of Music at Centenary United Methodist Church and at Faith Presbyterian Church (both in Greensboro), and I’m also the Choral Director for the Triad Tapestry Children’s Chorus, a group I’ve loved working with since 1993.

I've been in Greensboro since 1990. My husband, Lee, works for American National Bank, and we have three great kids – Alex, Abby, and Jack – and a house full of pets. When not occupied with work or family, I’m usually working with my retired racehorse, trying to teach her that it’s fine to go a little slower now.

holds degrees from Indiana University and the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He has served as the director of school choral, band, theater, and Suzuki music programs and was chair of the Fine Arts Department of Forsyth Country Day School for 12 years. Additionally, as an accomplished tenor, Jeremy has performed in numerous operas.

Jeremy and his family recently moved to Greensboro, and we are especially delighted that he, his wife, Wendy Looker, and their daughters, Mina  and Madeleine are all enthusiastic about coming to First Lutheran.
